Open source software is increasingly popular and in fact constitutes a large part of the final products or development libraries that everyone uses.
The wide diffusion of open-source products based on two primary reasons:
- The first is that the realization of such products is often shared by many organizations: universities, research institutes, SW development companies, etc. and this has facilitated the realization of a high quality amount of code
- The second is that much of this code is in form of products, libraries and plugins is free, downloadable and free from costs of license and annual maintenance.
This allows user to invest in the development of solutions using existing base products, avoiding the high costs of licenses typical of proprietary products.
The spread of Open Source is nowadays so high to ensure a wide range of products of comparable quality with proprietary products, also user can evaluate the products of interest autonomously and decide which of these is better adapted to their specific needs and then choose it to carry out their projects.
G.I.S. and WebGis software developed with Open Source technologies has now reached the limit of users of proprietary products, as reliable, shared, and always evolving with new components and integrations that are objectively more significant and available more quickly than is the case with proprietary products.
It’s a long time that ARCADIA SIT is investing in development of its own webgis product, based on open source technologies, for the dissemination and sharing of geographic information, integrating this geographic platform with a series of vertical applications designed and developed to respond efficiently to its customers: government agencies, private companies, other organization.
In this context ARCADIA SIT has integrated with its webgis (see site Skill WEBGIS) also products or third-party software platforms, creating in some cases specific applications and customizations.
The logic that drives ARCADIA SIT choices and ways of developing is designed to make geographical data available for each area in which this kind of information could draw an objective advantage to create information correlation, representation, consultation and spatial analysis.
For Desktop product ARCADIA SIT has selected, among many Open Source products, Quantum GIS (QGIS), developing plugins to streamline acquisition of geographic data, quality control, management of work flow production and data analysis.
In parallel other products to manage data have been selected in according to their technical characteristics of openness and efficiency (POSTGRESQL / POSTGIS) integrated them with the webgis platform.
The development team of SIT ARCADIA develop and customize products and updating of the base technologies, considering a constant analysis of the evolution of the open source products to ensure investment in themselves and their clients, putting innovation technology at the center of the activities of software production.
